The Cruciform Life: Overcoming Evil with Good

OVERCOME BY EVIL OR OVERCOMING EVIL WITH GOOD

March 12, 2023

Main Scripture: Romans 12:1-2, 9-21

Additional Scriptures: Matthew 5:38-39, 19:26, 1 Samuel 24:10-12, Revelation 12:11

POINTS:

  • Cruciform: A transformation of character and behavior that forms us more and more into the image of Jesus.

  • Overcome: A military word. Not passive.

  • If we pay back evil with evil, we form ourselves to that evil and evil triumphs over us.

  • Burning Coals: A wake-up call to save the person from evil.

  • To Overcome Evil with Good we must:

  • Hate what is evil. The love of God causes us to hate sin because of what it does to those we love.

  • Have a humble heart. Insults no longer affect the core of who you are because you’ve laid down your ego when you formed yourself to Jesus and now what He says about you is the truth that you form to.

  • Bless them. Tell them the truth but in a way that is affirming.

  • Aggressively Forgiving. You don’t exact payment, you leave it up to God.

  • When someone slaps you on the cheek they are not assaulting you they are insulting you.

  • To turn the other cheek means that you don’t let them keep slapping the same cheek, nor do you slap their cheek, you confront them, speaking the truth in love, wanting to reestablish a relationship with them.

  • Curse means to cut, and to bless means to speak the truth in love.

  • Jesus turned His cheek on the cross and overcame evil with good
