Flourish: The Discipline of Meditation

THE DISCIPLINE OF MEDITATION

Main Scripture: Psalm 1

Additional Scriptures: John 10:9-10, 15:10-11, Matthew 5-7, 7:13-14, Psalm 22:14-15, 103:1-2

POINTS:

  • Flourish: growing or developing in a healthy or vigorous way, especially as the result of a particularly favorable environment.

  • The law of the Lord is the revelation of God’s character through the person of Jesus Christ

  • To meditate is to patiently ponder scripture.

  • What are you meditating on?

  • Wicked counsel: Accusation

  • Sinners: Application of accusation

  • Mockers: Trying to bring others into accusation with them.

  • The greatest determinant of whether we flourish or decay is what we meditate on.

  • Our default thoughts are always about our needs. The devil tries to get us to meet our legitimate needs through illegitimate methods.

  • The devil tries to interpret scripture and our story, however, he is not the Author, Jesus is - heaven didn’t give him a pen and neither should we.

  • Chaff has no roots and adds no value.

  • Mediation is preaching to your soul by asking it questions.

  • Meditation is a bridge from bible study to prayer.

  • S=Scripture, O=Observation, A=Application, P=Prayer.

  • In the sermon on the mount, Jesus shows us what it looks like to meditate on the law of the Lord.

  • Jesus became chaff so that we could flourish.
