Flourish: The Discipline of Singing

THE DISCIPLINE OF SINGING

Main Scripture: Ephesians 5:15-21

Additional Scriptures: Job 38:4,7, Proverbs 8:30-31, Deuteronomy 31:19

POINTS:

  • Flourish: growing or developing in a healthy or vigorous way, especially as the result of a particularly favorable environment.

  • Singing is the second most commanded Christian practice in the Bible.

  • We are commanded to make a joyful and skillful noise to the Lord. Joyful, meaning from the heart, skillful, meaning done well.

  • Music gives witness to every single heart that life is not random, and that we were made for more by Someone who is more.

  • There are songs given only to the church that teach, exhort, and remind us of God’s redemption.

  • Alcohol is a depressant. It brings you joy and boldness by being less aware of your surroundings.

  • The Spirit is a stimulant. He causes you to see and engage in a deeper and truer Reality.

  • What is the controlling reality for you? Your current circumstances or God’s redemptive and saving work through the person of Jesus Christ?

  • Singing brings us joy. As we enjoy the Lord we find we enjoy Him even more.

I firmly believe, nor am I ashamed to assert, that next to theology no art is equal to music; for it is the only one, except theology, which is able to give a quiet and happy mind.
