Good Grief: If God is good, why did He let this happen?

IF GOD IS Good, WHY DID HE ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN?

Sermon Notes

Main Scriptures: John 11

Additional Scriptures: Romans 5:3-6, Isaiah 55:8, 61:2-3, Hebrews 4:15-16

POINTS:

  • We may feel like God has let us down and question His love for us.

  • We must grab ahold of the tools of hope that Jesus has given us: His love, His timing, and His counsel.

  • God’s love is not a pampering love, but a perfecting love.

  • God wants to pour Himself into our loss.

  • “If we knew what God knows, we would ask exactly for what he gives” Timothy Keller.

  • Jesus is both fully God and fully human, this makes Him the Wonderful Counselor in our grief.

  • The tools of hope are activated through prayer.

  • We must weep. Denial is not faith.

  • We can ask questions, but realize that although we may want an answer, what we need is more faith, hope, and love.

  • “Grief is not something we should be ashamed of because it’s proof that we loved deeply”

  • The only way for Jesus to stop Lazarus’ funeral was to cause His own.

“This does not end with death, it ends with glory”
