Flourish: The Discipline of Mending What is Broken

THE DISCIPLINE OF MENDING WHAT’S BROKEN

February 5, 2023

Main Scripture: 1 John 4:7-21

Additional Scriptures: James 1:19, 5:16, Romans 12:9, Corinthians 10:4-5

POINTS:

  • Triggers are emotional landmines that people step on that bring us back to the place of past trauma.

  • When we are triggered we feel powerless. We weren’t able to protect ourselves from the pain of the past, so we will instinctively try to protect ourselves from the pain we think is coming.

  • Healthy communication is honest, seeks to understand before being understood, and is built on mutual edification “you matter and so do I”.

  • Fear hijacks our relationships through passive, aggressive, or passive-aggressive communication.

  • Passive: You matter, I don’t

  • Aggressive: I matter, you don’t

  • Passive-Aggressive: You matter, not really.

  • Strongholds keep us from connecting to God or others.

  • The man-made weapons we use to demolish strongholds are communicating passively, aggressively, or passive-aggressively.

  • Only God’s divine weapon of love can heal us and demolish Satan’s stronghold in our minds.

  • Our confession to other Christians is a necessary part of healing what’s broken inside us.

  • Healing happens when we pray for one another.
